Amin Torture chambers
Idi Amin torture chamber is located in Lubiri Mengo. The palace of the king of Buganda with a local name called “Twekobe.”
This chamber is located about 3km away from Kampala the city center next to Kabaka’s lake and St Lawrence University.
It’s said that the torture chamber was set up in the 1971 by Amin dada. Who was the president of Uganda by then. He was also a military officer instead of a politician.
According to history, Idi Amin Dada was the third president of Uganda. He was one of the leading soldiers who formed the first Uganda independence army, before becoming president. He was named Deputy Army commander in 1964 when Uganda got her Independence.
Later Dr. Milton Obote deployed Idi Amin to help him fight the Katanga rebels. Who were against Zaire government where he sold Diamonds and gold given to him by the rebels in return for arms.
Later on, he became colonel of the army and in 1966. Obote sent a force led and commanded by Idi Amin Dada. To attack the Lubiri in order to bring out the king dead or alive, Amin carried out the order diligently. By obeying Obote’s orders, Amin had his goals and personal ambitions. He recruited and trained hundreds of his kinsmen into Army. Obote had come to realize this when its late and he wanted to arrest him for various cases including murder.
Amin used his men to stop the arrest and soon was declared the president of Uganda. While Obote was away attending a common wealth conference in Singapore.
Amin got an ideal to construct a torture chamber and ordered asians to do the job. He hich took about eight months of construction. The Israelites were the best engineers by then. He started by telling them to build a place for armory. After the building was complete, he turned it into a military base or barracks. Later these turned into torture chambers.
The torture chamber comprised of a dark tunnel with five cells. Which had an electric door at the entrance, seperated by an electric pool of water in the corridors. so that whoever tried to escape from the room would be shocked by electricity
In every cell there was an electrified entrance, no window or ventilators and was accommodating more than a hundred people who died due to suffocation and lack of food and water supply.
The torture chamber operatives would first blind fold the new person to be arrested in the chamber. They would blind fold you and drive around ring road in the palace from morning to evening so as to be confused, so by the time you are arrested you can’t recognize where exactly you are. This road still exits up to date and during your safari you will be able to see it.
Idi Amin’s trusted security operatives would go around villages and capture who ever is denying Amin’s governance and upon arrival at the entrance, electricity would be switched off before the person entered into the chambers that were filled with water connected with electricity. Both men and women would be arrested together without any food or water.
It’s believed that over 200,000 people lost their lives from the chambers. Due to hunger, others were badly beaten up, gunned others put in electric water while others tortured.
In 2003, IDI AMIN died and his activities were no more, his torture chamber is a living testimony for his brutality and people who have heard about him in history.
