The largest in Uganda and East Africa
Gaddafi mosque is the largest mosque in Uganda and East Africa. Its construction started in 2006 to 2007 after the government of Uganda had formed the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council . The Uganda Mufti Sheik Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje approached the Late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi during his visit to Uganda asking him for assistance to complete the Mosque. He agreed to assist them so the mosque officially opened in 2007. This mosque sits on 12 acres of land. It is located on top of Old Kampala hill, one of the oldest hills in the history of Uganda.
After construction of the mosque, it was commissioned to the Muslim fraternity of Uganda. It was a gift from the government of Libya under the Leadership of Late President Muammar Gadhafi of which the mosque got its first name.
However, following the death of Gaddafi. The mosque was renamed “the Uganda National Mosque” in 2013.
The mosque can accommodate 25000 Islamic believers. It has a good tourist angle of view in that one can easily spot all Kampala hills. On the mosque, there are head offices of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council based on the ground floor.
If one has reached Kampala city, the mosque is a one stop that cannot be missed by the victors in the city. This mosque is welcome to the victors that want to have an insight into the holy place of Islamic followers.
The dressing code is highly an advantage and a sigh of repect to the Muslim fraternity . Mainly for those are willing to pay avist to the mosque, for instance; female tourists are advises to wear long clothes and covering their hair with a veil. If one doesn’t wear or didn’t come with these clothngs no worries they can be provided at the reception. The dress code for male tourists is long sleeves and trousers before you attempt to embark on this tour.
This mosque was bulit with two floors of which the upper floor is for special events like the celebration of the holy month of Ramadan while the lower flooe is for daily prayers. The upper floor is the largest and it is the best for vist. It is partitioned into two levels; the ground level is for men and an upper balcony reserved for women.
The mosque is always open at different time intervals that is from Monday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and its open from 9am to 6pm.
But on Friday since that’s their holy day, its open from 9am to 11am.
The charge for the guided vist costs 10,000 UGX. This allows every vistor to tour everything including the halls, minaret and all the offical rooms at the place.
The Gaddafi moque was designed in a modern colourful structure. however it has magnificent features of art in the interior and was designed based on the cultures of Europe, Arab and African touch.
